Chapelboro: Pictorial views, scenes, places in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and the UNC Campus — 1975-2023

Campus View — Photos taken between 1972 and 2023.

These are pictures I’ve taken during my walks around campus, Chapel Hill and Carrboro during the the past 40+ years, first with the Nikon cameras from by Navy days. It was, however, the arrival of the iPhone the Canon EOS and power shot cameras that made taking pictures practically an obsession and less cumbersome. I was actually surprised at finding quite a number of these pictures.

The Heart of Campus

Most of these campus pictures were taken sometime between 2005-2024. But they are places that have been at the heart of our campus for about a century. Can we dare dream that they will last another century?

I haven’t been to a street celebration after winning since 1993 . But the 1882 championship and street gathering was and still is a part of me.

The two pictures are a great find. They are from my earliest roaming on campus back in 1973. UNC tennis team played their matches on tennis courts located near Spencer Dormitory (I lived in nearby Lewis Dorm. The two players below were all ACC and all Americans while playing Maryland—John Lucas II for Maryland and Freddie McNair for Carolina. Will go on to have a good career in tennis that included winning two grand slam doubles championship. Lucas while playing tennis was also an American point guard. He who is the first round draft pick for the NBA and had a solid career.. He is now a player development officer for the Houston Rockets.

Kenan Field House the original building. As a freshman in 1967-68 I lived in Morrison Dorm. I had to walk to in front of class and campus every day that year, including snowfall. It was always a wonderful walk.

A beautiful spring day, April 2010, with a nice crowd at Kenan Stadium watching a spring practice scrimmage.

I personally have really never liked watching our basketball games at the Smith Center. The place makes every seat not at close to floor leave a foreign country. The intimacy of Woolen much like Duke’s Cameron made games thrilling. Who remembers giving the business to Lefty Drissell ? Beating Duke and Clemson with the heroics of Bobby Jones and Walter Davis respectively. Hark the sound…

I was out walking about and stumbled on marker about this builder I’d never heard of. Checked the Davis Library digital collection https://openorangenc.org/buildings/thomas-f-lloyd-manufacturing-co-durham-hosiery-mill-no-7-national-munitions-corp-carrboro. Don’t know whether I was when I was in Chapel Hill or Durham when I took this on October 6;2017.

The weather outside was frightful…

UNC Student Stores on an early evening after a rain storm. The store building, House Library and Student Stores were a parking lot during my first year at Carolina 1967-68. They were built and fully operational when I returned to school in 1972. It has to be noted that the building was named for Josephus Daniels a man with a significant role in North Carolina and U.S. history. This link will explain his role. https://exhibits.lib.unc.edu/exhibits/show/1898/bios/daniels

Swain Hall. When I was an undergraduate Swain was the school of communications. I took one on my favorite courses there history of film, and I remember Prof. Pryluck our teacher.
