Chapelboro: Pictorial views, scenes, places in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and the UNC Campus — 1975-2023

Days and people on Campus

A spring. It’s sometime in April. The date was April 26th so the caps and gowns caught me a little off guard.

Carroll Hall view from Polk Place. Hanes Hall is on the right and Gardner on the left.

Manning Hall on Polk Place opposite Murphy.

These interesting spider sculptures by artist Louise Bourgeois appeared on campus in July of 2021. Her work is entertaining and clever. https://chapelboro.com/news/unc/spider-statue-eye-bench-artwork-set-to-leave-unc-campus

The Bell Tower

Cameron Avenue view of South Building from The Old Well.

These statues, a creation of sculptor Julia Balk (Class of 1989) created a storm when they were first displayed on campus in October of 1990. They appeared first mounted on stone walls like the ones above near the entrance to Davis Library. ,African American students and other student activists viewed the images presented as racially insensitive. After several heavily publicized days they were quietly removed. Several years later they were returned to a sculptured garden area just behind Davis and Greenlaw next to Bynum Hall.

Alumni Hall/Building

On McCorkle Place walking towards Franklin Street. It’s in April of 2018 a year after my retirement. I made these calming treks to campus and ChapleBoro or went to Durham to hang out. Nice work when you can get it !!!

A view of Lenoir Hall, House Undergraduate Library, Greenlaw Hall, the dome of Wilson Library taken from the the 6th floor of Davis Library.

A lovely spring visit to Coker arboretum. That’s my hat I’m using as a photo prop. There were staff nearby working the grounds.

The Chapel of the Cross is an essential place on campus. Its location is crucial—East Franklin Street between Spencer Dormitory and Morehead Planetarium. For years it was a designated voting place for general elections when I was at work on campus.

This picture was taken on July 14, 2014. Chapel of the Cross was undergoing extensive renovations for their preschool and offices..

A crane was at work on reconstruction of the Chapel’s pre-school and offices. I created a video on my phone I can’t seem to load.

This is the demolition or deconstruction’ of University Square . The history of this site includes the fact that it was home of Chapel Hill High!! Please read this excellent link about the schoolhttp://southernneighbor.com/2016/05/timeline-a-century-of-chapel-hill-high-school/. Just as important were the restaurants and other places on the for generations of us town and gown. Remember Swenson’s, the Little Professor Bookstore, Painted Bird, Looking Glass Cafe, Ken’s Quickie Mart, Cameron Craft, the Painted Bird. and of course Time-Out. The Square was anchored by a CCB Bank. And of course there was Granville the only surviving structure. https://www.americancampus.com/student-apartments/nc/chapel-hill/granville-towers

The two pictures below are what replaced University Square and is now called Carolina Square.
